DR. LLOYD MILLER BACKGROUND
IN UTAH FROM 1963
Since 1963 when Miller come to Utah from 6 years as a successful jazzman in Eruope, he continued his success and high energy at BYU where he and pianist Preston Kies (AKA Press Keys) put together the Oriental Jazz Quartet which played East-West blends based on Persian, Indonesian, Indian and other Eastern music. At the 1967 & 1968 Intercollegiate Jazz Festivals in Salt Lake, Miller won best arranger/composer trophies for his East-west jazz blends. At the 1969 Salt Lake Intercollegiate Jazz Festival, Miller won the first place trophy in the vocal category for his scatt and Eastern vocals. That year he also was awarded the national Sounds of Young America first place trophy for an Indonesian jazz blend composition.
